On May 28, local elected officials, war veterans, residents and members of the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 and the Central Islip Fire Department joined Allan M. Dorman, Mayor, Village of Islandia, for a special Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle. The ceremony honored those who sacrificed their lives for this country.

On October 1, representatives from POSCO, a South Korean steel manufacturer, recognized Sal Scarlato, President, Korean War Veterans Association, Department of New York, at a special ceremony at the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in Islandia. Mr. Scarlato was one of 100 Korean War veterans in the United States who were recognized by the company this year for their contributions to the South Korea’s economy and infrastructure.

Mr. Scarlato was presented with his portrait encased in a personalized stainless steel photo frame. The frame symbolizes POSCO’s “sincere gratitude and respect for Korean War veterans that will never rust,” the company said. Over the years, the company has developed deep ties with the local Korean War Veterans Association.

Commemorates 20 Years Since the Terrorist Attack on America

On September 10, the Village of Islandia held a special ceremony at the First Responders Memorial in honor of the memory of five local first responders who were killed during the September 11, 2001 attacks: Raymond M. Meisenheimer, Peter Brennan, John P. Napolitano. Glen K. Pettit and William J. Mahoney, Jr. This event commemorated the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

Mayor Allan M. Dorman was joined by village elected officials, employees and residents and members of the Col Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in remembering those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.

The mayor scheduled the ceremony for the 10th to give the residents the opportunity to attend other September 11th memorial ceremonies throughout Long Island the following day.

The First Responders Memorial was unveiled on June 2, 2018. It features five plaques, one for each of the five local residents who lost their lives that day. Mayor Dorman said this ceremony will continue to be held at the Memorial to remember those who perished that day.

As part of its commitment to the community and to protect the health and safety of its residents, the Village of Islandia distributed free face masks to several hundred residents between January and March. Mayor Dorman joined village employees and volunteers in handing out the masks to residents. To date, the village has distributed more than 10,000 masks.

For the first time ever, the Village of Islandia held a drive-through Christmas tree lighting on the grounds of Village Hall on December 5. Families had the opportunity to take pictures of themselves in front of the tree and with Mrs. Claus, and children dropped off their letters to Santa in the mailbox. They later drove around Village Hall and were met by village employees and local Boy Scouts, who gave out gifts to the good boys and girls of Islandia.

As part of its commitment to the community and to protect the health and safety of its residents, the Village of Islandia distributed 420 free face masks to its residents on November 23. Mayor Dorman joined village employees and volunteers in handing out the masks as residents drove behind Village Hall to pick them up.
