Village employees volunteered their time cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs. Local sponsors also provided soda, bottled water and ice cream. There were a variety of activities including face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides and a pirate costume contest. The Central Islip Fire Department was on hand to offer fire prevention and fire safety tips to local residents. The village also had its peddle carts as part of its ongoing DWI Awareness Program. Music was provided by DJ and village resident Robert Gerardi.

Approximately 350 people turned out for the fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of Islandia Village Hall on April 4. Fifty of the eggs had prize vouchers in them. All the children received a basket filled with candy, and a visit from The Easter Bunny and “Spongebob Squarepants.” Joe Guida, Islandia’s own “Singing Bus Driver,” came down to entertain the children. Everyone was treated to hot cocoa, coffee and cookies.
In addition to the Easter Egg Hunt, there was a Coloring Contest. The five village board members each chose their three favorites. For the Jellybean Counting Contest, 12-year-old Nayib Perez came the closest without going over, estimating 2,420 jellybeans in the jar. The actual count was 2,472 jellybeans.
Islandia Village held its third annual tree lighting ceremony today at Village Hall. Children visited the mini-Village Hall, and received candy canes from Mrs. Claus. As people enjoyed coffee and hot chocolate, DJ and village resident Rob Gerardi entertained the crowd with a number of festive Christmas songs. The event was capped off with a lucky little boy helping Mayor Allan M. Dorman to hit the switch and light up the tree. Santa Claus later arrived, riding on top of a fire engine from the Central Islip Fire Department. Children lined up to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas, and how they have been good this year.
On November 8, 2008, Islandia Mayor Allan M. Dorman unveiled the new war veterans memorial that was built at the Veterans Memorial Triangle at Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. Mayor Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, thanked those veterans for their service to this country, and to the architects, designers and builders for getting the project done quickly and perfectly.
Mayor Dorman was joined by member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, U.S. Military Vets MC – New York State Chapter 1, Suffolk County Legislator Ricardo Montano and representatives from the Lakeland, and Central Islip Fire Departments, Boy Scouts Troops #3 and # 272 and Central Islip Girl Scout Service Unit #35 joined in the lighting of the eternal flame. Music was performed by the Central Islip High School Marching Band.
Islandia Village Mayor Allan M. Dorman and the village board hosted the fourth annual Craft Fair and Pumpkin Fest, which was attended by more than 1,000 people, on the grounds of Village Hall. As adults went to the Craft Fair and browsed the vendors’ tables displaying beautiful handmade crafts, children took part in the Pumpkin Fest, where they joined in fun activities such as pumpkin painting, a visit through the Haunted Tunnel and a costume parade.
On Saturday, July 12, 2008, the Village of Islandia hosted its 3rd Annual Village of Islandia Bar-B-Que. This year’s theme was “All American” red, white and blue. 629 adults and children attended.
We served hamburgers and hot dogs with all the works. Soda, water and ice cream helped to quench our thirst in the hot sun. Small pools were set up for the little ones while two misters helped to cool off the adults. There were pony rides for the children and our DWI course was set up with over 100 people signed up to participate.
Our resident DJ Robert Gerardi played patriotic songs, along with hits for all ages. The Central Islip Fire Department was on hand to teach the children about the dangers of fire. Everyone was given a patriotic t-shirt and hat, and the children received toys and water pistols to help cool them off.
On Saturday, May 10, 2008, Village of Islandia residents participated in a newly established program that will target the effects of driving while intoxicated (DWI). The program is designed to demonstrate to our young, and not so young adults, how DWI will affect their judgement and driving abilities.
Participants were given the opportunity to experience the effects of impairment by using special goggles. They were asked to walk on a straight line, first without goggles, and then while wearing goggles designed to simulate being intoxicated. They then drove peddle carts, first without the goggles, and then wearing the goggles, to expereince the differences in their judgment and reaction time when driving impaired.
This was organized as an enjoyable event, but also as one that would leave an important mark on the participants. The powerful hands-on interactive tool demonstrated the dangers of impairment. Younger children drove their parent in a two-seater peddle-cart, as older children experienced driving the obstacle course themselves.
Participants who completed the course were given a t-shirt with the “Village of Islandia Educating our Children against DWI” logo and all were given a certificate of achievement.
The Village also thanks members of the Suffolk County Police Department for demonstrating their roll-over vehicle to stress the importance of wearing a seatbelt. The Village also thanks MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), who spoke about the consequences of driving while impaired.
Based on the program’s success, the Village plans to have it running at all of its events to encourage safe and responsible driving.
Earth day (Tuesday, April 22) was the kickoff for Islandia’s new recycling campaign. In order to increase recycling in the area, the Village of Islandia has distributed new sunshine yellow recycling pails to village residents as part of its new initiative to further encourage recycling.
“Imagine looking down your street on recycling day and seeing all the bright yellow pails out in front of our homes. What a great way to send a message to our children and neighbors that we care and we recycle,” said Allan Dorman, Islandia Village Mayor, in describing the inspiration for the program.
The color of the pails was chosen by the residents of Islandia. Intended to draw attention and encourage recycling, the pails will replace aged green pails many residents currently use.
“Our goal is nothing less than 100% resident participation in our recycling program. We must all do our part to encourage recycling and conserve the environment. We hope that other municipalities will join us in this effort,” said Mayor Dorman.
