On November 7, the Village of Islandia held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle. Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, was joined by local elected officials, war veterans and representatives from the Central Islip Fire Department to honor those who served and continue to serve in the armed forces.

There was a musical performance by the Central Islip High School marching band before the ceremony. Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation.

During the ceremony, Mayor Dorman asked those in attendance to remember local residents who served in the military and have since passed on. He also recognized all the local veterans’ groups that were in attendance and announced that the village has established the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, located at Islandia Village Commons, and the designation of veterans-only parking spots in the Village Hall’s parking lot. The ceremony ended with village officials joining war veterans in placing a wreath and bouquets of roses in front of the memorial.

After the ceremony, members of Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 gave out gift bags to attendees containing an American flag and a green light bulb. Attendees were asked to replace their outdoor lights with the green light bulb on Veterans Week as part of the “Greenlight a Vet” project as a way to honor those who served our country.

Throughout the event, children decorated pumpkins and took part in a Halloween costume parade and contest. They also joined their families as they went on hayrides and walked through a chilling Haunted Castle that kept everyone on their toes. Islandia’s own “Joe the Singing Bus Driver” was there to tell spooky stories and sing Halloween songs for the children.

The village also provided guests with hot cocoa, cider and cookies. Each resident left with their very own pumpkin.

On July 11, more than 500 Islandia Village residents came out to celebrate the village’s 30th anniversary during Islandia’s 10th Annual BBQ. This year’s theme was “Star Wars,” as costumed characters from the film greeted visitors and the Village Hall parking lot was decorated with R2-D2 balloons.

Village employees and local Boy Scouts served residents hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, salad, and cold drinks. The celebration included a hayride, kiddie pools, games, face painting, pony rides, petting zoo, a volunteer dunk tank, raffles, a blueberry pie-eating contest and music. Mayor Allan M. Dorman led residents in the singing of “Happy Birthday” as a birthday cake to celebrate the village’s 30 years was brought out.

The village was officially incorporated on April 1, 1985, after voters approved a referendum. On May 22, 1985, village residents voted for its first mayor and board of trustees.

The Village of Islandia is home to over 3,300 residents and over 1,300 businesses. It encompasses 2.25 square miles and contains 275 acres of Greenbelt, including Lakeland Park and Islandia Farm. The village is comprised of the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Connetqout School Districts, and the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Lakeland Fire Districts.

Village of Islandia Installs Its First Veterans of Foreign Wars Post

Grand Opening Will Take Place after Memorial Day Ceremony
Post to be Named after Late Local Army Chaplain

Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, has announced that the Village will be introducing the first VFW Post in Islandia, Post #12144, to the community on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Memorial Day ceremony.

The post is named for Col. Francis S. Midura, an Army chaplain and a Monsignor at St. Thomas More Church in Hauppauge who passed away in 2012. Col. Midura presided over the village’s Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies and its special memorial ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The VFW post is open to veterans of all wars — including those who recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan — and is currently accepting new members. Mayor Dorman, who served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, sought to establish a post so local veterans would not have to travel long distances to meet with fellow veterans.

The mayor recently received the charter for the post after 40 new members signed a petition to have it established in Islandia. Those who signed the petition were required to provide a copy of their DD214, which verifies their military service.

“This new VFW post gives our local veterans the chance to meet locally, so they do not have to travel to eastern Suffolk or Nassau County to find a post,” Mayor Dorman said. “The village is very pleased the post will be located inside the Village Commons. It’s the least we can do to help thank our veterans for their service.”

The meetings will be held at the last Saturday of the month starting at 10 a.m.
