On May 28, the Village of Islandia held its Memorial Day ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial Triangle, located at the intersection of Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. Local elected officials, war veterans and village officials were in attendance. Islandia Village Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, recognized those who served our country — including local war veterans who have since passed away — and acknowledged the local veterans groups who have attended the current and previous ceremonies. There was also a laying of the wreaths at the memorial.

VFW Post Member John Probst Raises Over $1,200

John Probst received an award from the Lt. Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #12144 for distributing the highest number of poppies in the post for 2015. He also collected over $1,200 in donations to benefit the VFW. Post Commander Raymond Bush presented the plaque at the meeting on March 26.
Local Families Brave the Cold to Come out for the Village of Islandia’s 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Five hundred families beat the cold by hopping over to Islandia Village Hall for the 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, which took place on March 19. Children and parents stayed warm by enjoying hot cocoa, coffee, tea, cupcakes and cookies and dancing to the music performed by “Joe the Singing Bus Driver.”
During the Easter Egg Hunt, children collected some of the 8,000 Easter eggs that were spread throughout the Village Hall grounds. Some of the eggs contained a ticket in which the lucky children were able to redeem for a special prize. Before the end of the event, the children stopped to get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.

Despite the Warm Weather, Islandia Residents Got Into the Holiday Spirit at Village’s Christmas Tree Lighting
Islandia Village residents took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to attend the village’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which took place on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Those in attendance had the opportunity to see the decked-out sleigh in front of Village Hall, receive candy canes from Mrs. Claus and get their pictures taken with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the “elves”.
Joe the Singing Bus Driver led the crowd in singing holiday favorites. After that, Mayor Allan M. Dorman and members of the Village Board joined together in the annual lighting of the Christmas tree. Santa Claus later arrived on a fire truck, courtesy of the Central Islip Fire Department, and gave out presents to the good little boys and girls of Islandia.

Village of Islandia Remembers Those Who Served during Veterans Day Ceremony

On November 7, the Village of Islandia held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle. Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, was joined by local elected officials, war veterans and representatives from the Central Islip Fire Department to honor those who served and continue to serve in the armed forces.
There was a musical performance by the Central Islip High School marching band before the ceremony. Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation.
During the ceremony, Mayor Dorman asked those in attendance to remember local residents who served in the military and have since passed on. He also recognized all the local veterans’ groups that were in attendance and announced that the village has established the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, located at Islandia Village Commons, and the designation of veterans-only parking spots in the Village Hall’s parking lot. The ceremony ended with village officials joining war veterans in placing a wreath and bouquets of roses in front of the memorial.
After the ceremony, members of Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 gave out gift bags to attendees containing an American flag and a green light bulb. Attendees were asked to replace their outdoor lights with the green light bulb on Veterans Week as part of the “Greenlight a Vet” project as a way to honor those who served our country.
More Than 600 People Come Out for Islandia Village’s Pumpkin Fest

The Village of Islandia held its Pumpkin Fest on the grounds of Village Hall on October 24 as more than 600 people came down to enjoy the Halloween-themed festivities. Throughout the event, children decorated pumpkins and took part in a Halloween costume parade and contest. They also joined their families as they went on hayrides and walked through a chilling Haunted Castle that kept everyone on their toes. Islandia’s own “Joe the Singing Bus Driver” was there to tell spooky stories and sing Halloween songs for the children.
The village also provided guests with hot cocoa, cider and cookies. Each resident left with their very own pumpkin.

The Islandia Village Board recently voted to ban the sale of medical marijuana and any equipment used with the drug. Mayor Allan M. Dorman said that hospitals and doctors, not stores, should be responsible for dispensing medical marijuana. Read Article
Village of Islandia Welcomes Starbucks

On September 25, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, joined village employees and board members in the grand opening of the new Starbucks on 3701 Expressway Drive North. The new Starbucks location features a drive-up window and is conveniently located on the north service road off the Long Island Expressway.
“We welcome Starbucks to Islandia and continue to welcome new businesses to our village. It is important to note that Starbucks has recognized this location and the Village of Islandia as an ideal spot to expand its business,” said Mayor Dorman.
Mayor Allan M. Dorman Renames Silverleaf Lane in Memory of Village Court Clerk

On August 12, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, invited family members of former Village Court Clerk Linda Sheahan to a special dedication ceremony in which Silverleaf Lane was renamed Linda R. Sheahan Lane in her memory.
Ms. Sheahan began working in the village in 1987. In addition to her duties as a Village Court Clerk, she worked as Deputy Village Clerk and Deputy Registrar. She was remembered for being very knowledgeable in the Building Department and her willingness to help the residents in the village. In 2008, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought a long battle against the disease until her passing on July 27, 2014. Her sister, Marilyn Griffaton, currently serves as Deputy Village Clerk.
Ms. Sheahan and her husband, Dennis, lived on Silverleaf Lane for 35 years. That is where they raised their three children: twins Carrie and Kristine and their daughter Denise.
