Site of Former Delicatessen Purchased by Village Will Provide Office and Retail Space, House Suffolk Police and Village Public Safety Unit

On June 30, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, joined village officials in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Village of Islandia Commons. The mayor has announced that the village has purchased the building that was the In & Out Deli, located at the corner of Old Nichols Road and South Bedford Avenue.

Mayor Dorman also announced that the building will be renamed the Village of Islandia Commons. In order to generate revenue, the village will lease out office and retail space to incoming businesses. An artist’s rendition of what the building will look like was available for public view to the residents in attendance. The retail space will be occupied by a flower shop while a local business will move into the office space.

The building will also house Suffolk County Police and the village’s Public Safety Unit in order to increase police presence in the area, since the building has high visibility along the main corridor, and to eliminate blight from the village which attracts criminal activity and drives down property values.

Village residents, board members and employees got together at the village hall grounds to take part in the village’s seventh annual Community Garden planting on May 12. They planted tomatoes, spinach, beans, radishes and peppers in the community garden. The young plants were graciously provided by Borella Nursery. Now, local residents can visit the garden, help take care of the plants and enjoy watching the fruits of their labor grow.

The garden was opened in 2006 as the result of an initiative put forth by Village Mayor Allan Dorman. Mayor Dorman and the village residents are hoping for a bumper crop this year. Residents who participate in the planting not only help beautify the village, but will get a chance to work alongside their neighbors and enjoy each other’s company.

On September 22, Allan M. Dorman, Mayor, Village of Islandia, celebrated the grand opening of Men On The Move, located at 1960 Veterans Memorial Highway. Mayor Dorman joined John Beyer, President, Men On The Move, and fellow employees in celebration of the event.

Men On The Move came to the Village on June 8 to the site of the former Fort Knox facility. The company spent $750,000 in improvements to the site prior to opening, with the repaving of 5.5 acres of asphalt, new roofs on all the storage facilities, new gates for better security upon entry and a state-of-the-art security system. Racanelli Construction, a business partner with Men On The Move, fixed the roofs on the storage facilities.

This is Men On The Move’s newest location. The company also has locations in Floral Park and Huntington, with another facility planned for Glen Cove. It offers 24-hour access in a secure setting so people can store or retrieve their belongings any time of day.

This adds to a growing list of businesses coming to Islandia. This year, village officials celebrated the grand reopenings of Sunoco and Bolla Food Market on Motor Parkway and Postal Connections and Gina’s Enchanted Flower Shoppe on Veterans Memorial Highway. On August 31, Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island moved into its new facility on Sycamore Avenue from Hoffman Lane.
