On May 29, the Village of Islandia held a Memorial Day ceremony in the Veteran’s Memorial Triangle, at Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. The event opened with an invocation, and was followed by a wreath ceremony.
Islandia Village Mayor Allan Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, addressed members from the local chapters of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Korean War Veterans of America and the Vietnam Veterans of America and local elected officials. Gina’s Enchanted Flower Shoppe in Islandia graciously donated the flowers for the ceremony.
The Village of Islandia celebrated its 25th anniversary on April 11 as village residents were served breakfast by village employees and members of Boy Scout Troop #272 of Ronkonkoma. Paul Pontieri, Mayor, Village of Patchogue, came to the celebration to congratulate Mayor Allan M. Dorman on the village’s silver anniversary.
During the breakfast, residents listened to music played by local DJ Robert Gerardi and got a chance to meet the “Statue of Liberty” and “Uncle Sam.” Upon leaving, they received a Douglas fir sapling in commemoration of the village’s milestone.
The village was officially incorporated on April 1, 1985, after voters approved a referendum. On May 22, 1985, village residents voted for its first mayor and board of trustees.
The Village of Islandia is home to over 3,000 residents and over 1,300 businesses. It encompasses 2.25 square miles and contains 275 acres of Greenbelt, including Lakeland Park and Islandia Farm. The village is comprised of the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Connetqout School Districts, and the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Lakeland Fire Districts.
Children scampered the village hall grounds searching for Easter eggs during the 5th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 27. They also got a chance to meet the Easter Bunny and some of their favorite cartoon characters in person. Children also participated in the coloring contest, and the jellybean counting contest. Islandia’s own “Singing School Bus Driver” Joe Guida came down to entertain the kids.
The village of Islandia has announced its winners of the Coloring Contest that took place at the village’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. Five winners were named. All the winning entries are posted below.
The weather outside was frightful, but that did not scare away Islandia Village residents who came to the 4th annual Christmas tree lighting on December 5. Residents stayed dry and warm with cookies and hot cocoa as “Joe The Singing Bus Driver” entertained the residents, playing his guitar and singing Christmas songs. Santa Claus hitched a ride with the Central Islip Fire Department inside their fire truck and came to distribute toys to the good boys and girls, with help from Santa’s elves. Santa Claus also posed for pictures with the participants and village board members.
The Village of Islandia honored its war veterans at a special veterans memorial dedication ceremony on November 7. Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, joined the village board in thanking those who served and those currently enlisted in the armed forces for their service. They also asked those in attendance to remember the soldiers that were killed in the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas on November 5.
Members of the New York Honor Guard, the Vietnam Veterans of America, the local Korean War Veterans chapter and the American Legion were in attendance, as well as residents of The Arbors Assisted Living facility and members of the Ghost Ryderz Motorcycle Club.
The Central Islip and the West Islip Fire Departments brought out their ladder trucks to proudly raise the American flag. The ceremony opened up with a musical performance from the Central Islip High School marching band.
The Village of Islandia held its 5th Annual Craft Fair and Pumpkin Fest on October 24 on the grounds of Islandia Village Hall. Local children came dressed in their favorite costumes, decorated pumpkins, took part in a costume parade and helped themselves to cookies and hot cocoa. Prizes were awarded for best decorated pumpkin and best costume.
As the children enjoyed themselves at the pumpkin patch, adults visited the Craft Fair, where local vendors sold books, candles, novelty holiday items and knick-knacks.
The Village of Islandia hosted its 4th annual Summer Bar-B-Que on July 11 on the grounds of Village Hall. More than 800 village residents turned out for this fun-filled event.
Village employees volunteered their time cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs. Local sponsors also provided soda, bottled water and ice cream. There were a variety of activities including face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides and a pirate costume contest. The Central Islip Fire Department was on hand to offer fire prevention and fire safety tips to local residents. The village also had its peddle carts as part of its ongoing DWI Awareness Program. Music was provided by DJ and village resident Robert Gerardi.

Fifteen winners were named, as the five village board members each chose their three favorites. Each winner received a $10 gift certificate, courtesy of Dave and Busters of Islandia. Approximately 350 people turned out for the fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of Islandia Village Hall on April 4. Fifty of the eggs had prize vouchers in them. All the children received a basket filled with candy, and a visit from The Easter Bunny and “Spongebob Squarepants.” Joe Guida, Islandia’s own “Singing Bus Driver,” came down to entertain the children. Everyone was treated to hot cocoa, coffee and cookies.
In addition to the Easter Egg Hunt, there was a Coloring Contest. The five village board members each chose their three favorites. For the Jellybean Counting Contest, 12-year-old Nayib Perez came the closest without going over, estimating 2,420 jellybeans in the jar. The actual count was 2,472 jellybeans.
