Newsday published a glowing profile in its Real Estate section about our community. We are proud of the work we have all done to make Islandia one of the best and most affordable places on Long Island to live, work and raise a family. On behalf of the Village Board, thank you for all that YOU do to make Islandia great.
– Allan Dorman, Mayor

On September 11, the Village of Islandia hosted the New York Police Department’s Transit Bureau K-9 Unit at its annex building to conduct a demonstration of how these police dogs search for explosives.
Officers brought in two explosive detection canines, “Devon” and “Simi.” Inside the building, the dogs went from room to room to find hidden “explosive odors.” The dogs undergo four to five months of training before going out into the field.

On September 11, the Village of Islandia held a special ceremony at the First Responders Memorial in honor of the memories of five local first responders who were killed during the September 11, 2001 attacks: Raymond M. Meisenheimer, Peter Brennan, John P. Napolitano. Glen K. Pettit and William J. Mahoney, Jr. Mayor Dorman was joined by Village elected officials, employees and residents and members of the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in remembering those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.

On July 20, over 1,000 residents attended the Village of Islandia’s 19th Annual BBQ at Memorial Recreational Field. Village employees and local Boy Scouts served hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, soda, and water. Children enjoyed hay rides, games, music, dancing, pony rides, a petting zoo, a water slide, and a blueberry pie eating contest. This was our biggest and most successful event ever, and we are grateful to our wonderful community for making it such a memorable day.

We want to make you aware that English ivy has been found in the Village. Its vines can cause trees to die and damage residents’ properties. The invasive plant’s vines kill the trees by climbing up the tree trunks, making their way along the branches and twigs and preventing the trees from receiving sunlight. The dead trees, weighed down by the vines, can fall onto vehicles, homes or people.
To kill the vines, pull them up by hand when the soil is moist. You can also pull them out using a rake, or cut them from the bottom with pruning shears, a hand ax or other cutting tools. Work around the tree until all the vines are clipped. For the remaining vines that are on the ground, use a herbicide.
If you need assistance removing English ivy from your residence, call Village Hall at (631) 348-1133.

Mayor Dorman served up hamburgers and hot dogs for students from Andrew T. Morrow Elementary School during the school’s Field Day, which took place at Memorial Recreational Field on June 24.

Mayor Dorman hosted a special Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle on May 25. The ceremony honored those who sacrificed their lives for this country.
During the ceremony, Mayor Dorman recognized those veterans who were in attendance and asked everyone else to remember those who sacrificed their lives so that this country continues to remain free.
The ceremony also included an invocation by Chaplain Tom Brauner of VFW Post #12144 and ended with a laying of the wreaths by members of the VFW and Village officials.
