A Message From The Mayor

I would like to take this time to thank you for the privilege to serve as your Mayor. I, along with the Village Board, share in the same vision as all the residents of Islandia. Every day, we work to improve the quality of life all of us desire and expect from living in a village.

Talk to Me!
In order for me to do a better job as Mayor, I need to hear from you. Please send me a message. Thanks for helping me continue to make the Village of Islandia a great place to live, work and play.

To live in the Village of Islandia is to live in a community where neighbors actually talk to each other and, when the time comes for everyone to pull together, we do. This became very evident last year during Hurricane Irene. We spent a lot of time during and after the hurricane making sure that falling trees and debris were removed from the streets to make them safe for the residents and emergency units to pass through. I saw neighbors helping neighbors everywhere. We provided generators to our residents in need when we could. By the end of 2011, we purchased additional generators to help even more residents.

Our village enhancements that include the new fencing on Veterans Memorial Highway and on Old Nichols Road are an eye-stopper as people drive through our village. Our Veterans Memorial Triangle continues to be a landmark for our village. In 2011, we completed the expansion of the Village Hall parking lot. This addition, we hope, will eliminate the illegal parking on Old Nichols Road in front of the ball field.

Residents continue to attend the village events at increasing numbers each year. It’s a time for all of us to enjoy the company of our neighbors and to show our children what it is like to live in the Village of Islandia. Our BBQ and Pumpkin Fest had a record attendance of over 800 residents at each event. This is a great indication that we are united as a village and our children will benefit from that.

In the year 2012, homeowners in the Village will not have to pay a separate fee for their garbage pickup. That means, if the Town of Islip were responsible for contracting a garbage carter to pick up your waste, you would pay about $472.00 yearly for that service. These savings — along with no increase in village taxes — will put more money in the homeowner’s pocket at a time when it is much needed. We are able to accomplish this for the third year in a row because your Village Board is fiscally responsible.

Our senior bus service is active and I urge everyone 60 years and over to take advantage of this great service. I will be sending out flyers on my next “Cup of Joe” with the Mayor soon. This is a good time to talk about anything you wish or to learn something new that is going on in the village. I look forward to seeing everyone at the village events.

Thank you again for this opportunity and remember: this is only the beginning!

Sincerely,
Allan M. Dorman, Mayor
